Beauty – Confident Skincare Review w/ promo code!

Are you like me and you get a little (or VERY) overwhelmed in the beauty aisle at Target? What is the right face moisturizer? So I was super excited when Confident Skincare reached out to me about their skin care program, especially when I found out the regimen is personalize based on your personal needs. Yes! I don’t need to torture my husband with my beauty aisle indecisions!

Confident Skincare is a subscription based company, you get 3 products of your choice and 2 bonus products for only $27 per month. If you know your skin needs, you can choose a program or you can take a survey and let Confident Skin Care help you decide. I have combination skin with dry patches and an oily T-zone so I took a survey because I wasn’t quite sure what products would work best with this skin.

Confident Skincare recommended a 90 day Acne Sensitive Program that comes with a correcting cleanser, correcting day cream, correcting sensitive skin serum, eye cream, and face mask. Most importantly, Confident Skincare is a cruelty free brand, they do not test on animals at any point from idea to creation. Thank you!

Before Confident Skincare, I’ve been pretty lazy. I always wash my face, but usually with only water and I would forget to moisturize. Not any longer!

Your skin program arrives in this lovely container. I like to keep it next to my sink because its pretty to look at and reminds me to wash my face, moisturize, ect. But this ain’t just another pretty package, I love these products. They feel really great on my skin and SMELL wonderful. Y’all, smells are very important!

I have sensitive skin but I had no issues with the product in the beginning. I still have an oily T-zone by the end of the day, but the dry patches on my chin and nose have completely disappeared. My skin feels great and it’s been a great confidence boost!

TIP: Dont neglect your neck. Your neck is just as important as your face and shows your age.

Why yes, that is a Sailor Moon towel, it adds to my relaxing face mask experience. If you would like to partake in the Confident Skincare experience, I have a special discount code for you! Jump to the bottom of this post!

The lovely people at Confident Skincare has given the readers at Ohkay Alyssa a 40% discount with the code ALY40.

Amicalola Falls, Georgia

This weekend, our friend Chris, drove up to Atlanta from Florida for a ‘lil visit. Fall is hitting hard in Georgia right now, so it’s the absolute perfect time of the year to go hiking. We’ve been going to Sweet Water Creek lately so this was our first visit to Amicalola Falls. We’ve lived in Georgia for four years now, and we’re JUST FINALLY exploring the state. Right now is the first time our schedules have the same weekend too. So we all jumped in the car and drove to Amicalola with our dogs, Chris, and friends to hike to the waterfall.

I was aware there were stairs, but I don’t think I understood that we would be walking up 600 stairs. If you are capable of climbing, then go right ahead, but there is an alternative route that doesn’t involve torture. Luckily the weather was absolutely gorgeous and I wore a very unsensible dress as my hiking attire, so I didn’t get very sweaty. After we reached the top and took our selfies, we hiked another trail to the bottom and I felt like I was in a YA novel, like Shadowfell by Juliet Marillier (my favorite author). The leaves are changing and its SO SO PRETTY!

I just want to run through the woods and touch all the leaves!

After the hike and drive home, we were FAMISHED so we ate our way through four plates of Nachos at El Rey Del Taco and felt very, very well fed. I’m working on an Atlanta Guide and I am SO going to highlight that restaurant, its my favorite Mexican food in Atlanta.

FUN FACT: Amicalola is derived from the Cherokee word meaning ‘tumbling waters’.

Save or Splurge on your fall hat?

A fall post! Finally! Have you noticed EVERYONE and their mom is wearing hats this fall? I recently went on a mission to buy my own fall hat and found two options. Can you guys which one I bought?

The Splurge hat is Sole Society and I absolutely loved it. It made me feel a lot cooler than I am, haha! But I had a feeling my husband wouldn’t take too kindly to me spending $40 on a hat. So I decided to pop in to my local Target and just see if they had an equivalent. Marriage is all about compromises, ya know? The Bargain’s rim is a little smaller but its basically the same hat.

The Target gods heard my plea and answered my fashion prayers. All in all, save your money and buy your hat at Target.

Speaking of bargains, run to your nearest Madewell and pick up this dress! I couldn’t find it on the website any longer but I just picked it up in store on sale. I love the print and I think it will work for fall and winter…and spring….and summer. Basically, I’m in love. The cut is very forgiving, so I will definitely wear it on Thanksgiving, haha!

What is your favorite fall accessory?

No true endings.

So I took a bit of a break during the month of September and October. Not from life, I was busier than ever at my job, but from pressure of my blog and social media. While we were visiting family during labor day weekend, my brother in law unexpectedly passed away.

God works in mysterious ways and all the circumstances that happen that weekend have been a testament that our Heavenly Father knows our needs and blesses us, even in the darkest of times, and especially when you think you least deserve it. I’m still unable to find the right words to accurately describe the grief we’ve been going through in the weeks following but I am so thankful for the friends back home who have reached out and helped bear our burdens by providing sweet words, memories and wonderful meals.

Steve has always been a joy to me because of his welcoming and warm nature. It was so easy to talk to him and he was one of those special people you always wanted around. He is so funny, and so sweet, and everything you want in a brother. He helped me moved from Orlando to Atlanta. He made me smoothies everytime I came over. He always drove us to the airport for our stupid 4 am flights. Quite simply, he was too good to be true.

Death is not final. Families are forever. The Savior Jesus Christ gave his life so we could be together again in heaven. We grieve not because Steve is lost forever, but because we will miss him so much during this mortal life.

I just want to share some quotes that have provided me peace, to anyone who needs it.

  • “We can’t fully appreciate joyful reunions later without tearful separations now. The only way to take sorrow out of death is to take love out of life. …Our limited perspective would be enlarged if we could witness the reunion on the other side of the veil, when doors of death open to those returning home. Such was the vision of the psalmist who wrote, ‘Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints’ (Psalms 116:15).” Elder Russel M. Nelson
  • “If you love something, love it completely, cherish it, say it, but most importantly, show it. Life is finite and fragile, and just because something is there one day, it might not be the next. Never take that for granted. Say what you need to say, then say a little more. Say too much. Show too much. Love too much. Everything is temporary but love. Love outlives us all.” R. Queen
  • “As we draw near to God, He will draw near to us.” Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Weekend Guide: San Diego

My friend Anna, blogger Live. Laugh. Love. Repeat, and I just spent last weekend in San Diego and it was a blast! Anna is also my coworker and when our job asked us to travel to LA for a couple days, I knew we had to make a pitstop in San Diego. My sister, Morgan, has been living there for a few years and was happy-ish to play hostess for a weekend. The weather has been horrible in Atlanta and we were looking forward to some beaches, beautiful weather and we were not disappointed! California may be going through a drought but it does not lack in beauty. I was so jealous of how easy it is to spend time outside and how stinking photogenic California is. I want to trade cities now!

Del Mar Racetrack

You know whats a classic Morgan-ism? Running out of gas. She picks Anna and I up from the airport and tell us we’re going to the racetrack. Okay, I was a little skeptical about that because I thought racetracks were for sad old men with gambling problems. On our way there, I tell Morgan she’s low on gas and she told me she ran out last week but we should be good. Ha! Luckily we JUST passed a gas station when her car runs out of gas. This won’t be the last time she runs out of gas, I’m telling you.

Anywho, the racetrack was a hoppin place to be on a Friday night and there was a concert afterwards! Millennials everywhere, I tells ya. I bet five dollars on eight, it was over very quickly, then I lost five dollars.

Sister power!

Acai Bowls/Tacos/Everything

You know what’s amazing about San Diego? All the AMAZING places to eat! I loved eating then walking to the ocean. Something about a walk on the beach just settles your stomach, you know. UM can you believe I’ve never even heard of acai bowls until last weekend? I wasn’t truly living until now! We had our first acai bowls at Java Earth Cafe, thank you Java Earth Cafe.

I highly recommend every restaurant we ate at:

  • Java Earth Cafe: 4978 Cass St, San Diego, CA 92109 (avocado toast and acai bowl)
  • Brick & Belle Cafe: 928 Silverado St, La Jolla, California 92037 (acai bowl, duh)
  • Shorehouse Kitchen: 2236 Avenida De La Playa, La Jolla, CA 92037 (the chicken chilaquiles were delicious)
  • OB Noodle House Bar 1502: 4993 Niagara Ave, San Diego, CA 92107 (great pho and garlic chicken wings)
  • Puesto: 1026 Wall St, La Jolla, CA 92037 (amazing tacos)

La Jolla Boutiques & The Fashion Valley

Since we were only in San Diego for two days, we didn’t do much shopping but I loved the sweet boho chic fashion everyone was rocking. It’s not my personal style but Anna fit right in! We found the cutest boutique, Mimi & Red, where I finally found a highly sought after “I” necklace. I for sweet baby Ian, of course.

There are lots of little shops like this in La Jolla but if you are looking for a real mall, check out The Fashion Valley. It is a cute outside mall with the staple stores and some variety.

Windansea Beach & Hilton Bayfront Pool

Okay, nobody told me about bikinis in California. They’re very…cheeky. I’m wearing my high waisted bottoms and feeling like a total outsider but ya know what? That’s how I do. Some people want to show off their amazing butts and I like to pretend I’m Marilyn Monroe, ain’t nothing wrong with it. If you are going to see the ocean, please go to Windansea Beach. I have a hard time with California beaches because the water is so cold (and I get bored) but this beach is beautiful with tons of rocks to explore and great for walking. But don’t be like me and forget to apply your sunblock.

We wanted to swim, but not in the ocean (because cold and sharks) so we stopped by the public pool at The Hilton. It was right on the ocean with a beautiful view. It was the perfect end to our beach day.

Do you have any recommendations for my next visit? Let me know in the comments!

What I Wore: Black Jumpsuit Baby

I bought this jumpsuit in Tokyo this summer by accident. My friend, Arielle and I were in Harajuku and while she waited in the longest restroom line ever, I browsed and I discovered this beauty. As soon as I tried it on, I knew we were destined to be together forever. I love how the back is opened and the jumpsuit looks like its tucked in the front, like they’re separate! I have a hard time with soft pants because of this bubble butt, but it fits like a gem aka no diaper butt. If you’ve tried on rompers/jumpsuits in the past, you know what I’m talking about.

PS. Can you believe I got these sunglasses at Forever21? For five dollars!? I’ve been browsing F21 more often and I keep finding sweet gems every time I stop by. This is either very good for my wallet or very bad, I haven’t decided!

Do you remember the Stila Liquid Lipstick from my Birchbox post? This is it! I really like it! You apply it like lipgloss and it goes on smooth and stays ALL DAY! No smudges! So bright! This is my new favorite until my next new favorite. Ha!

How do you wear your jumpsuit? Are you going to run to F21 and buy these sunnies!?

My Favorite Things: Part 1

Pretty much anyone who meets me quickly realizes I absolutely adore Sailor Moon. It’s not a casual appreciation, Naoko Takeuchi’s story Sailor Moon has been more influential to my life than watching Disney movies on repeat as a child. If you’re not familiar with Sailor Moon, the sub is available on Hulu, Viz Media is redubbing the series (I still love the original though!) and you can find the manga at book stores and Amazon. And have you been living under a rock your entire life?

According to the wiki summary, the series follows the adventures of Usagi Tsukino as she transforms into the titular character to search for a princess and an artifact called the “Legendary Silver Crystal”. During her journey, she leads a diverse group of comrades, Sailor Guardians as they battle against villains to prevent the theft of the Silver Crystal and the destruction of the Solar System.

I remember, in third grade, I saw Sailor Moon on this girl’s binder and walking towards her in a zombie like trance to ask “WHAT THE HECK IS THIS!?”. As soon as I got home, I signed onto my dad’s AOL account, searched for Sailor Moon and it blew me away. Sailor Moon was Serena (DIC dub) and she was clumsy and a bit of a cry baby (like me!) but when she transformed into Sailor Moon, she saved the day with her friends and boyfriend. I found out it aired on Toonami after school and that was it. I became obsessed with the manga, going to fan sites everyday, fan fiction, collecting merchandize. It was so different than any other cartoon was I was exposed to. I felt like it was created for ME, a girl! Finally!

Sailor Moon celebrated it’s 20th Anniversary a couple years ago and I’ve been collecting the new merchandise and trying to immerse myself in this phenomenon that I’ve loved for the past 18 years.

Do you remember Sailor Moon? How has Sailor Moon influenced your life?

What I Wore: LWD

I had a lot of fun taking these pictures for all of 5 minutes and then the skies opened and released a downpour upon us. I woke up thinking how much I loved this dress and I HAD to do an outfit post after work. “NOT SO!” said Mother Nature. But I got a couple shots!

You guys I absolutely love this dress. And white dresses. And Madewell, hot dang I love that place.

ps. this is the moment it started raining, thank my husband for capturing my what the heck face, haha!

Birchbox In My City – Atlanta, GA

Doth mine eyes deceive me? Did I really bring my husband to a beauty event and he actively participated and enjoyed himself? When we arrived I told Ian he was such a good sport and he replied, “Well you said I didn’t have a choice.” Well, well, well,  look who built his own box when my back was turned! You know what’s really cute? He even bought himself a subscription to Birchbox Man!

I sampled the Benefit Gimme Brow Volumnizing Micro Fiber Gel (say that three times fast!) and seriously? Look at those eyebrows! This might be my next beauty buy, because you know, EYEBROWS BABY. I also sample some lipsticks and I really appreciated that they sanitized each lipstick.

Everyone working at the Birchbox and Birchbox Man Road Trip were really friendly and helpful. Ian had some wise guidance as he chose his products (as did I) and it was a pretty fun event. The next destinations are Chicago and Los Angeles. There are dates and more information at the Birchbox website if you happen to live in those cities. I missed out on the special events but I’m glad it was a low key day, because it was so darn hot outside!

Ian chose (with guidance): Hanz De Fuko Sponge Wax, Baxter Facial Scrub, Das Boom Everywhere Lotion, H’ Foaming Shave Gel, Mizu Water Bottle, and LSTN Sound Co. Real wood earbuds with microphone.

I chose: Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream, Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash, Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick, Benefit the Porefessional, Folle de Foie Eau de Parfum, and Oribe Wave and Shine Spray.

Did you attend this Birchbox event? What products are you most excited about?
